| Firefox |
My preferred browser and what this homepage is optimized for, there are many cool things to say about Firefox, one of them being all the extensions available. |
| Thunderbird |
The mail client I mostly use, It does everything I need it to do and it does it well. |
| Fluxbox |
A minimalistic window manager, with only the basic features, but with the ability to get pretty much everything you want installed on top of it, very resource efficient and just right for my needs. There is a nice little guide on how to to get fluxbox working on Gentoo after X11 is up and working |
| The Gimp |
The program for editing digital images of any kind on Linux. I recommend working through a few tutorials to get to know the ins and outs of the program if you have not been using the The Gimp before, I still discover new things that I am able to do with the Gimp from time to time. |
| gqview |
A little program that is very useful for looking through photos and such and doing simple editing. One of the things I use it a lot for is taking care of my photos |
| Jpilot |
A calender designed for Palm Pilot and such. |
| Scribus |
A layout program, at least as good as very expensive programs used by professionals, like adobe pagemager, and this one is free. |
| VIM |
A diffrent kind of text editor. When you get to learn to use it I find it very efficient, I often use it for writing code of diffrent kinds. It works quite diffrent from what you find in other text-editors and takes some time and practise to get used to, the more you use it the faster you get and you keep on getting faster even if you do not get any faster at typing anymore. There also is a graphical version og VIM called GVIM, which is just a graphical interface for VIM |
| Bluefish |
Another text-editor, this one is full bred graphical and designed for writing HTML code. Much of my homepage is written in Bluefish, while the other part is written in VIM which is also very good for the purpose. |
| XMMS |
X MultiMedia System. I primarily use this to listen to my sound files (mp3, ogg, wav ...). I have tried quite a few others but I keep on going back to xmms which is anyhow what most other players build on. |
| Mplayer |
This program is pretty much able to play any media file. A great multipurpose program. |
| ReZound |
A program for editing sound files, it is able to do a lot more than I need it to, seems very prof to me, but I don't know any other programs for things like this so I have nothing to compare with. |
| Open Office |
Much better then MS-office in my eyes, it does the same things, but better and then a few things that MS-office does not do. And then ... it's free, no evil MS that want's your money. I mostly use OOffice when others send me MSOffice files that I need to view and/or edit, but otherwise I don't use Office programs that much anymore, they seem to be a bit clumsy to me. |
